Make Room
Pastor Terrell Dawson Jr.
- Making room is rarely convenient, but always meaningful.
- A strange question to ask God: How little can I love others and still be okay with God?
Luke 10:25-29 (Voice) // Just then a scholar of the Hebrew Scriptures tried to trap Jesus.
Scholar: Teacher, what must I do to experience the eternal life?
Jesus (answering with a question): What is written in the Hebrew Scriptures? How do you interpret their answer to your question?
Scholar: You shall love—“love the Eternal One your God with everything you have: all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind”—and “love your neighbor as yourself.”
Jesus: Perfect. Your answer is correct. Follow these commands and you will live.
The scholar was frustrated by this response because he was hoping to make himself appear smarter than Jesus.
Scholar: Ah, but who is my neighbor?
- We don’t get to choose our neighbor
- We don’t get to choose how we help
Luke 10:30-37 (NLT) // Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.
- Awareness without action still leaves people wounded.
Luke 10:30-37 (NLT) // “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.
- Compassion doesn’t walk around the need…it steps in.
Luke 10:30-37 (NLT) // Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’
- Love that costs nothing changes nothing.
Luke 10 (Voice) // Jesus: Which of these three proved himself a neighbor to the man who had been mugged by the robbers?
Scholar: The one who showed mercy to him.
Jesus: Well then, go and behave like that Samaritan.
- When we make room for others, three things always happen…
- We See
- We Stop
- We Step In
- Making room for others happens when we begin to see people the way God sees us.
