Considering the Wonder of God’s Creation

by Dr. Gordon Miller

Psalm 8:3-5 (TPT)  // “Look at the splendor of your skies, your creative genius glowing in the heavens. When I gaze at your moon and your stars, mounted like jewels in their settings, I know you are the fascinating artist who fashioned it all! But I have to ask this question: Why would you bother with puny mortal man or care about human beings? Yet what honor you have given to men, created only a little lower than Elohim, crowned with glory and magnificence.”

Psalm 139: 17-18 (TPT)  // “Every single moment You are thinking of me! How precious and wonderful to consider that You cherish me constantly in Your every thought! O God, your desires toward me are more than the grains of sand on every shore! When I awake each morning, you’re still with me.”

When we stop and consider the handiwork of God in His creative genius, how can we not stand in awe? He alone created the intricate details of the tiniest creatures, the majestic enormity of the greatest beasts that roam the earth, the variation of the leaves on the trees, and the expanse of the heavens in its resplendent beauty. How can we not be amazed?

AND YET, that wasn’t enough. In the midst of this beauty and wonder, the Lord God Almighty (El Shaddai) created humanity and established us as the crowning jewel of His creation, and gave us authority and dominion over all His other creative works. Why? Who are we?

I love to walk along the nature trails in my community and observe the beauty of the sunrise, to pause and listen to the sweet melodic songs of birds in the trees, and even to note the variety of nature itself: trees, flowers, birds, the tiniest of caterpillars, butterflies, and, even, lizards.

I can’t help but marvel at this beauty and of God’s devotion to His creation. That alone is enough to worship Him!

AND YET, He considers me (and you) of far more importance and made us for His purposed design. In those moments of solitude, I am drawn into closer and deeper intimacy with my Creator, and I long for more. Instead of being filled and satisfied, I crave to know God more deeply and more intimately, to enter into new depths of communion and fellowship.

And I wonder, “Who am I? Why me?” And I am reminded that His Word says He thinks of me in every moment and He cherishes me in every thought. And I rejoice that the Lord is my Creator and King.

He watches me every moment of every day. There is not a thought, word, or step that I take that can ever separate me from His love or remove me from His presence. He loves me that much.

In the 1968 Academy Award-winning movie Oliver (based on the book by Charles Dickens) there is a pivotal scene early on when orphaned Oliver was challenged by his fellow orphans to ask for more food. He was hungry and scared, yet, with temerity, he approached the master of the meal and said, “Please, sir, I want some more.”

The chaos that ensued set the direction for the rest of the movie. In our hope and hunger for closer intimacy with God, let that hunger for more drive us to approach Adonai, our Lord and Master, and in all humility make our petition, “Please, Lord, I want some more.” And God will provide out of the abundance of His grace and love.

Prayer

Holy and Majestic Lord, Creator and Designer of all things, I come to you in amazement of your creative genius, with a longing and hunger to draw closer to You in ever-deepening intimacy. I thank You for the depth and passion of your gracious love for me. Humbly, I ask, “Please, Lord, I want some more. I want to know You more.” May I never be satisfied? In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen and Amen.
